The Plan of Salvation
Who am I? Where did I come from? Why am I here? Where am I going? These questions are the most profound questions we will ever ask ourselves. The plan of salvation answers all of these questions. When we know where we have been and where we are going, we are able to live more fulfilled and meaningful lives here on earth.
Mormons believe that life started in the pre-mortal existence. Before life on earth, we lived with Heavenly Father. We were spirits, without a body of flesh and bone. In the pre-mortal life, we prepared ourselves to come to earth, receive a body, and use our agency to do right. At a certain point, Heavenly Father realized that we would never progress and grow if we stayed in the pre-mortal state. He presented a plan to send us to earth to be tested and learn to choose good over evil. Lucifer opposed the plan and started a war in heaven. He and his followers were denied bodies and are unable to progress. Satan and his followers are jealous of those who chose God’s plan and were able to receive bodies and live on earth. Because of this, he continually tries to tempt and lead us away.
Mormons believe purpose of mortality is to gain a physical body and to strive to be like our Savior Jesus Christ. In our mortal existence, we are being tried and tested. Our actions are being watched. In everything we do, we are trying to prove that we are strong and capable sons and daughters of God. We are supposed to learn from overcoming trials and through that, form a stronger relationship with Heavenly Father. We are to establish eternal relationships with our family. Mormons believe that families will dwell together forever. We believe that strengthening our families is important.
One of the beliefs of Mormonism is that when we die, our bodies die but our spirit continues to progress. When we are resurrected, our body and spirit will become one again. Death is a natural part of life and simply acts as a door to the next life.
After death, we enter the spirit world where we wait for the judgment. Prophets have revealed to us that the spirit world is right here on earth. The spirit world is divided into the spirit paradise and spirit prison. Those who accept the gospel and live in accordance with God’s teachings go to the paradise. Those who lead lives of sin, deny the gospel, or haven’t had the chance to hear the gospel will go to the spirit prison.
There will come a time when all people who ever received a body will be resurrected. Christ was the first to be resurrected three days after he suffered on the cross. We will then be judged and God will decide which kingdom to put us in, where we will live forever. The kingdoms are divided into three; the celestial, the terrestrial, and the telestial.
Having knowledge of the Plan of Salvation can help us live with happiness and peace.
